人们的一个刻板印象是程序员不擅长社交多数是单身，但数据显示IT工作人员结婚率并不低，至少美国是如此。Computerworld分析了美 国社区调查和美国2010年人口普查数据，发现IT业的结婚率高达62.1%，高于科学家（56.5%）低于工程师（65.5%），与其它白领职业在同一 水平——金融（62.4%）、法律（62.0%）和医疗（61.3%）。
相比之下，美国所有成年人的结婚率是51%。从未结过婚的IT工作人员的比例略 高，有26.7%，而科学家是31.9%，IT职业人士的离婚率比较低。
