Bug Description

Running a Kubuntu vivid beta 2 live image on my laptop I get the ubituity-dm screen. I press "Try Kubuntu" and it takes me to the SDDM login screen. Autologin should work and trying the exact same USB drive on a different computer it does reliable autologin. It's also reported to work fine on Virtualbox.

Looking at the logs this isn't a fault with SDDM but X is crashing on login returning us to SDDM

summary: - SDDM autologin does not always work on live image
+ X crashes on some runs of Kubuntu live image

I have similar problems with latest Ubuntu Vivid daily build (2015-04-16: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/vivid-desktop-amd64.iso) installed on USB media. In boot I see messages "invalid user: ubuntu ubuntu".

Is that still true on current vivid daily images?

Today it doesn't even return to an sddm login. There is a crash for kactivitymanagerd in bug 1446725 which happens at the same time as the X crash.

I do still get this on today's daily on my Thinkpad "Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)". It's still fine on my Sony Vaio

Hello, I am having similar issue with an installation(not live), after logging in, while desktop is loading, something crashes and takes me back to sddm login. Is there any log file I should check?

I believe I am also seeing the same thing. A live image present me with a choice to try or install and 'try' results in a blank screen (hard crash?) with no ttys available.

Jonathan Riddell, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Vivid reached EOL on February 4, 2016.

Could you please test for this via http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ and advise to the results?
