The build will be part of the fbl_awesome branch

Windows 10 Consumer Preview is expected to be announced either at the January 21 event next month or soon after that, so since we're so close to the official launch of this new build, it's no surprise that new information emerges very often.

This time, new details about the consumer preview version of Windows 10 are provided via the development channels that Microsoft updates once development of new builds is completed, thus allowing us to track work on this new operating system.

As Brad Sams of Neowin notes, Microsoft calls its Windows 10 builds in various ways, obviously based on a number of factors, but one of the versions that have recently showed up in logs is fbl_awesome.

As you can see on BuildFeed, the first “awesome” version of Windows 10 was 9900, while the most recent one is 9908, so work on this particular build continues.

Could this be the consumer preview build?

The short answer to this question would be “yes.” It's really hard to tell why exactly Microsoft decided to call a consumer preview “awesome,” but it's easy to speculate.

The CP version of Windows 10 is very likely to include new features and functionality that were not available in the Technical Preview, among which Continuum and a working version of Cortana, so there's no doubt that this new release would be more “awesome” than those aimed at enterprises.

And if we put together all pieces of the puzzle, there's more proof that fbl_awesome could actually point to a consumer preview build.

Back in early December, Gabriel Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, said on Twitter that “we're working on delivering you an awesome build in 2015,” thus suggesting that this build name is actually pointing to a possible consumer preview release planned for early next year.

What's with build 9901?

Many people actually believe that Windows 10 build 9901 is the consumer preview version that will be released next month, during the January 21 event. In fact, this is just an internal version of the technical preview, which makes some people wonder how come that such a build being tested behind closed doors reached the web.

Either way, development of fbl_awesome advances these days and is now at build 9908, so until January 21 expect work on several new versions to be completed. Obviously, more details will be provided next month, during the press event, including new features that were not available until now in preview builds.
