@nodejs/lts can we get some thoughts in here wrt v4 and 4.4 vs 4.5? I didn't expect 4.5 to go stable till mid-September so the decision was easy but there's a tiny window here where we could upgrade to 4.5 and head in to LTS with that or stick with 4.4 which has had some real-world exposure via io.js v3.x. Getting v4 out the door has to happen by Monday PT at the latest so the window is tiny and obviously risky.

So my thought is this: We seemed to agree on not taking new v8 version within, say, a week and a half of a major release. However, if this doesn't cause much in terms of C++ changes, it gives us an extra 6 weeks of patches towards our LTS that we would otherwise have to do ourselves. Also, arrow functions.

According to the V8 API Changes doc, it doesn't look as bad as some other releases. What type of breakage would this cause for compiled modules? I'd like to take the newer V8 heading into LTS if possible, without screwing the ecosystem again.

https://github.com/nodejs/node/compare/vee-eight-4.5 - the biggest risks I see here is the wholesale s/Handle/Local which is expected, by us and the NAN team but not by users who have been busily upgrading their addon code to use NAN 2 and still safely getting away with using Handle in many places, so this is API beakage. Further, Function::New is now in the MaybeLocal camp, I'm not sure if NAN is prepared for that one.

Swear I remember @kkoopa saying nan 2 should be compatible up to v4.5.

Also, Local<Value> v8::Function::Call() is only marked V8_DEPRECATE_SOON() not V8_DEPRECATED(). A good chunk of our API still uses the later. So I don't see that as a concern.

As far as the /s/Handle/Local goes, that'll only fail if we have V8_IMMINENT_DEPRECATION_WARNINGS defined. @bnoordhuis did enable V8_DEPRECATION_WARNINGS, but not the other. So the use of Handle should still work. Ben, seems the former flag was defined in 4.5. Should it be added?

While it may not be awesome to use deprecated APIs, things will still work. And there are reported performance fixes that we could use right now. Our performance has been going down hill in more than a few areas since v0.10.

I'd prefer we stay at 4.4 as we worked hard to get our z port of v8 to 4.4 and switching to 4.5 at this point would be a reset for us but I understand this should not be the determining factor. Just one more piece of information. In terms of the risk I also share Jame's concerns or taking a new one so close to the LTS RC.

The TSC discussion landed on leaning towards upgrading to 4.5. @rvagg will be running some tests to make sure nan isn't broken before the decision is finalized. We're waiting on his data.

If anyone else can help, that would be greatly appreciated. We need to test some existing addons that have switched to NAN2 to see if they work against the latest (there is a list in #2654). You can build an appropriate Node by checking out the vee-eight-4.8 branch and merging this PR in.

I'll be basically offline for a few hours so won't be able to get to this and I have a ton on my plate already so any help would be welcomed.

One idea might be stop burning further build resources on getting this landed into vee-eight-4.5, and instead manually land it. This needs to be PR'd to merge into master, at which point it will get tested again. This has had enough testing already for me to feel comfortable.

(BTW, @orangemocha, node-accept-pull-request currently serializes builds for all target branches. In this example, this PR doesn't need to delay, or get delayed by, PRs against master. It would be nice if the serialization was on a per-target-branch basis. /feature-request)

About the failed test-process-config.js mentioned above in #2632 (comment) by @Fishrock123 : that was part of job 469 that run in iojs-rackspace-win2012r2-2. The TAP report shows two failed tests, but the console output tells a different story.

The last job to run on that machine before 469 was job 467, that was aborted. Node did not stop, so git clean failed, and test.tap was left behind, that's why the tap parse succeeded. But config.gypi was already deleted.

@orangemocha had already noticed that node sometimes does not stop correctly, and it is already in our task list to fix it.
